Such a Powerful Musical: Les Miserables

If any of you know me, you know that I am completely obsessed with some musicals. Recently, I watched the Les Miserables movie, and let me tell you it was phenomenal. Les Mis is a very powerful story that takes place during the French Revolution. It shows how peoples lives were back then, and how they suffered. This can relate to social studies because it is a historical moment. This can also relate to English because in the book we are reading, there are parts of the story that show how people are suffering, and that everyone's lives are not okay. One of the reasons why I love it so much is because it is not a happy story, it is realistic. Many movies take away the truth of the matter in hopes of more people enjoying it. This was a very sad time and this story shows the truth in that.
One of my favorite characters in Les Mis is a woman named Fantine. She lives a life as a single mother working in a factory to provide for her daughter. She sings a song called "I Dreamed a Dream" where she sings about her life without her daughter's father, and how it could have been so much different if he hadn't have left. She never thought things would end up the way they did. This song is so amazing and poweful. Anne Hathaway plays Fantine in the movie, and the link down below is a video of her singing "I Dreamed a Dream." Some people might think that her singing this song is not very good at all because she is crying the whole time and showing a lot of emotion. To me, her showing real emotions makes it all the better.
If you have not seen this movie, I would recommend going to get it as soon as possible. Les Miserables is also a book and a Broadway musical. I have not had the chance to read the book or see the musical, but someday I hope to do so. Our school is doing this musical as the yearly spring play, and I am looking forward to it! I cannot wait!
